What is STEM?
In GCISD we define STEM -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math--as a curricular program that integrates the concept of STEM across core content areas and electives where appropriate.  Our program has a strong emphasis on engineering and design thinking.  Students use the lens of STEM by utilizing an engineering design process in all aspects of learning.  As students develop the outcomes in our Portrait of a Graduate, the driving force is STEM.  The concept of technology reaches beyond instructional technology into the idea of how technology transforms and can be used to find and solve problems.  STEM is more than the sum of its parts, it is a philosophical approach that develops STEM habits of mind, aligns with LEAD 2.0, and supports the GCISD STEM Vision.

Why STEM?

STEM learning is an economic imperative. Experts say that technological innovation accounted for almost half of U.S. economic growth over the past 50 years, and almost all of the 30 fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in STEM.

  • In 2009, just 34 percent of U.S. 8th graders were rated proficient or higher in a national math assessment, and more than one in four scored below the basic level.
  • In an international exam given to 15-year-olds in 2009, U.S. high school students ranked significantly behind 12 industrialized nations in science and 17 in math. Students in only 4 industrialized nations scored lower in math.
  • Only 45 percent of U.S. high school graduates in 2011 were ready for college work in math and 30 percent were ready in science.

What is the GCISD STEM Vision? 

STEM in GCISD provides a rigorous pathway that inspires students to problem solve, innovate, take risks, create, work collaboratively, design, communicate effectively, and take ownership of their learning by making authentic real-world connections through the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across content areas in preparation for future college and career opportunities that will empower them to envision solutions for global issues.

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD STEM Program
Cannon Elementary is the home of our K-5 program.   Students in the Cannon attendance zone are automatically in the program.   Additional seats for the 1-5 program are offered via a transfer process annually.   Grapevine Middle School houses our 6-8 program in a school-within-a-school model.  Students enrolled in the K-5 program at Cannon Elementary receive priority seating in the 6-8 program.  Cannon students who live outside the GMS attendance zone will still need to apply for a transfer.  Additional seats are offered district-wide via the transfer process annually.   Our 9-12 program is housed at Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School utilizing a school-within-a-school approach.   Students may only attend their zoned high school campus to participate in the program.   Grapevine Middle School STEM students receive priority seating in the high school programs.
