Inclement Weather

GCISD closely monitors weather and road conditions when inclement weather is in the forecast. In the event of bad weather, we must consider the safety of all students when making decisions about school closures. GCISD administrators work closely with local police, fire and emergency management experts and will determine school delays or cancellations based on the safety of all students district-wide.

If schools are to be closed for an entire day, that announcement will be made early that morning. Early release of classes already in session may be made if it appears that weather conditions are becoming worse and driving would be hazardous.*

GCISD uses multiple methods to notify parents of school delays and school closures:

Emergency Notification System: If school is delayed or canceled due to a weather-related event, notices are sent directly to parents and employees by phone, email and text via the district's SchoolMessenger automated notification system. NOTE: Please be sure that your contact information is up-to-date in Skyward Family Access

To sign up for text alerts, parents should text “Yes” to 67587 to subscribe to the service. The cellular phone number must be listed in Skyward Family Access in order for a parent to receive text messages from the district or their child’s school. Parents may check or change the phone number listed by logging into Family Access and clicking the button to update their phone numbers. Note: Although GCISD does not charge for this service, regular messaging charges from cellular carriers may apply. Please be aware that some carriers do not allow messages from short codes to be received, even if a parent subscribes to the service. If you sign up for text message notifications and do not receive them in the event of inclement weather, please contact your provider. To opt out at any time, text “Stop” to 67587.

District Website & Social Media: Twitter is one of the first forms of communication for GCISD. You can follow @GCISD for official alerts and notices. When the situation permits, the district will also post closings to the district's website at and Facebook page.

In a Severe Weather Event during school hours and activities, GCISD emergency management personnel may implement a Shelter protocol.

A reminder for parents: When emergency protocols are activated, parents should not come to the school. Doors may be locked and staff will be focused on the safety and accountability of all students. GCISD will provide parents with instructions on when and where to pick up students. Review our Student-Parent Reunification Method handout for more details.

Se les recomienda a los Padres de familia a que se inscriban para recibir alertas por medio de mensajes de texto (PDF)

It is the practice of GCISD to keep students at school once the school day has begun. Only in the most extreme cases, will the district consider the early release of students as this often presents many more safety concerns for children then benefits. Parents and guardians are not always available to receive their children after an early release. The district’s decision to dismiss earlier than normal is coordinated through all levels of the district so that students remain under supervision.
