Exams for Acceleration- Grades 1-5 Without Prior Instruction
(Exams to Skip a Grade)
REQUIREMENTS: Students currently enrolled in the District in grades 1 through 5 will be eligible to accelerate to the next grade level, in which the student has received no prior instruction.
The student must meet all of the following requirements: [See Policy EHDC]
- The student scores 80% or higher on a criterion-referenced test for the grade level to be skipped in each of the following areas: Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies; and
- A District representative recommends that the student be accelerated; and
- The student’s parent or guardian gives written approval of acceleration.
The purpose of examinations for acceleration is to accelerate through a grade level. The only students that should take examinations for acceleration are those who display an extremely advanced level of understanding of the learning objectives of the examination, which will be the grade level above the current grade level in which your child is enrolled. Placement in accordance with these guidelines will be recorded on the permanent record. The recorded scores are the scores obtained from the examinations for acceleration.
A student may take an exam for acceleration no more than twice. If the designated score is not achieved by two attempts, the student must complete the course or grade level.
Students will be given two exams (Math and Science) on the first exam day. If a student does not meet the required passing score of 80% or higher on both of those exams, the parent will be notified that the student will not continue testing on the second exam day. If a student does score 80% or higher on both of those exams, the student will be given two more exams on the second exam day (ELA and Social Studies).
Regardless of the testing date for Acceleration Exams, students who meet the above requirements are eligible to accelerate one grade level only at the beginning of the next school year.
Acceleration testing is for Grapevine-Colleyville ISD students only. Students not enrolled in the district prior to the registration deadline are not eligible for testing. If your child is not enrolled in GCISD schools, please contact the school where your child is enrolled for possible acceleration testing through their enrolled school.
Special Note Concerning Gifted and Talented
Examinations for acceleration are not a component of GCISD’s gifted and talented services. Accelerating to a higher grade is not an automatic promotion into GCISD’s ASPIRE Program for Gifted and Talented students.
Students currently eligible for ASPIRE may be required to take additional examinations to participate in ASPIRE at the higher grade level.
