As part of the student voice initiative, GCISD will periodically feature news articles written by high school journalism students.
History was made in GCISD when the first ever Spanish Spelling Bee was held at Silver Lake Elementary School (SLES) on Monday, November 28. Elementary school students around the district had the chance to show off their spelling abilities, improve their pronunciation skills and teach themselves and others about the Spanish language.
Participants of the spelling bee were fourth and fifth graders that were involved in the dual-language programs at elementary schools like Cannon Elementary - A GCISD STEM School (CAN), Timberline Elementary (TES), and Silver Lake Elementary. (SLES) The students first participated in the spell-offs, a campus level spelling bee against other students. The top spellers from each school went to SLES to participate in the district bee. The first place winner was Reese Sporrer from SLES, followed by Madeline Rios from TES, and Hannia Ortiz from CAN in third place. The first place winner, Reese, will go on to compete in the Regional Spanish Spelling Bee in San Antonio on February 3.
