Former Ponder High School girls’ basketball head coach Greg Gay has been named to the same position at Grapevine High School. The recommendation was approved during the Monday, June 19 Board of Trustees meeting.
"I am very excited to be joining the staff at Grapevine High School as the head girls’ basketball coach,” Gay said. “I look forward to the opportunity to see where we can take the Lady Mustang basketball program in the future.”
Gay has been with Ponder High School since 2013 where in addition to coaching girls’ basketball, he is the head golf coach. During his tenure the team improved from a record of 3-24 in 2013-2014 to 26-9 in 2016-2017. Prior to joining the Ponder coaching staff, Gay worked at Anna High School as the girls’ coordinator and basketball coach in 2012. From 2005-2012, Gay was at Bullard High School where he led his team to five consecutive district championships. He began his career at Whitehouse High School in 2001 where he remained until 2004 when he coached for one year at Huntington High School.
Coach Gay earned District 14AAA Coach of the Year honors in 2008 and was named District 17AAA Coach of the Year from 2009-2012.
“We have a tremendous girls’ basketball program at Grapevine High School and we are excited to see how Coach Gay can elevate the players both on the court and in the classroom,” said GCISD Executive Director of Athletics Bryan Gerlich.
Gay earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Texas at Tyler.
