Head Wrestling Coach announced for Colleyville Heritage High School

On Monday, May 22, GCISD Trustees named Jose Lazo as the new head wrestling coach for Colleyville Heritage High School.

"I am honored and excited to have been chosen to be the next head wrestling coach here at Colleyville Heritage,” Lazo said. “I want to push the wrestlers to be as successful as possible both on and off the mat and I will do my best to grow this program to reach its maximum potential."

Lazo has been the head wrestling and assistant football coach at Irving High School since 2012. He lead his team to the district championship in 2014-2015, when he was also named the 2014-2015 Region and District Coach of the Year. Coach Lazo also received the District Coach of the Year honors in 2013-2014.

“We are so excited to have Coach Lazo join our Panther coaching staff,” said GCISD Executive Director Bryan Gerlich. “We look forward to watching him continue to grow the wrestling program at Colleyville Heritage.”

Current Colleyville Heritage assistant wrestling coach Ron Mendoza served as the interim head coach this year while campus and district administrators looked for the permanent leader for the program.

Coach Lazo earned his associates in science from North Lake Community College in 2009 and his bachelors in kinesiology from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2011. While at UTA, Lazo was on the wrestling team where he was a national qualifier in 2010 and 2011 and was also named an Academic All-American in 2011. He also served as team captain his junior and senior seasons.
