Posted on 11/17/2020

GCISD is proud to recognize eight students that have been honored by the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) as part of the Dr. Martin D. Jenkins Scholar Award program. Named in honor of Dr. Jenkins, Father of Research on Gifted Black Students, the program is designed to honor the achievements of highly gifted Black students who excel academically in school.

Colleyville Middle School student Ellie was named an award recipient, one of just six students in the entire nation to receive the honor. She spoke in front of a virtual national audience at the NAGC Annual Convention.

To meet eligibility requirements, an individual must be a Black student enrolled in a public school in grades 6-12 and meet at least three of the following criteria: exceptional test score, accelerated coursework, exemplary achievement, early entrance/MS dual enrollment/HS joint enrollment, exemplary school work, or competition winner.

Additionally, Ellie received one scholarship covering registration to attend the Gifted Education Research & Resource Institute’s (GER2I) Summer Residential Program at Purdue University, access to various Ambassador Programming & Peer Mentoring opportunities and a $300 scholarship. Recipients are also invited to participate in the Jenkins Scholar Alumni Network after their first year in the program.
