The following was sent to the GCISD community on June 23, 2021.
As GCISD continues to plan for the 2021-2022 school year, we wanted to provide you with an update regarding COVID-19 protocols and learning options. As a reminder, beginning on June 1, 2021, masks became optional at all GCISD campuses and facilities, and the COVID-19 response protocols that were in place during the 2020-2021 school year expired. The District is currently contact tracing during summer school programs; however, the close contact quarantines are optional.
Regarding learning options, all GCISD campuses will continue to offer traditional, in-person learning when the school year begins on August 18 with no required COVID protocols that were previously implemented during the 2020-2021 school year. We know that most students learn best in a face-to-face setting; however, we also realize that some students may have found greater success in an online learning environment.
The District has continued to monitor information and legislation discussed in Austin as part of the 87th Texas legislative session. As of June 21 there is no current legislation which addresses remote learning options for students in Texas in the future. Additionally, the Texas Education Agency has said school districts will not receive funding for remote learning. GCISD has a full-time virtual academy in iUniversity Prep which opened in 2012 and has become the highest performing virtual school in Texas. The District will look to expand enrollment of iUniversity Prep for students that meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled in fifth through twelfth grade for the 2021-2022 school year. Students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade may only participate by in-person instruction.
- Students must have been enrolled, with 90% or greater attendance, and academically successful and engaged during the entire 2020-2021 school year.
- For students in fifth through eighth grade:
- Passed the 2021 STAAR or the iUP alternate assessment if the student did not sit for all applicable STAAR exams.
- Promoted to next grade level
- For students in ninth through twelfth-grade:
- Passed the requisite EOCs to date
- On track to graduate in four years
- Students must have a score of Advanced High on all TELPAS domains
- Families are committed to remaining virtual at iUniversity Prep for the full 2021-2022 school year.
It is important to note that the courses offered at iUniversity Prep are through a separate course selection guide, which may be viewed here. These are the only course offerings available for students. Additionally, students are not eligible to participate in any extracurricular programs or activities offered at any other GCISD campus. The school calendar at iUniversity Prep is different from the other GCISD schools and may be viewed here.
Students that attend iUniversity Prep will still be able to enroll in advanced courses, AP courses, accelerated courses in middle school math and science, and dual credit. Students with disabilities (504 or IEP) may be able to enroll if they only need accommodations or limited speech therapy that can be effectively delivered via Adobe Connect. Students in iUniversity Prep will not be able to receive services for ESL, dyslexia, gifted and talented or special education instruction and related services.
Families interested in enrolling in iUniversity Prep should sign up to attend a virtual information session. As we may need to make staffing changes due to the number of students interested in attending iUniversity Prep, please apply to the program by July 12, 2021. A medida que GCISD continúa planeando para el año escolar 2021-2022, queremos proporcionarle un anuncio sobre las opciones de aprendizaje. Como recordatorio, las mascarillas pasaron a ser opcionales en todas las escuelas e instalaciones de GCISD a partir del 1 de junio de 2021, y se caducaron los protocolos de intervención COVID-19 de GCISD que fueron implementados durante el año escolar 2020-2021. El Distrito está actualmente realizando el rastreo de contactos durante los programas de verano escolares; sin embargo, los períodos de cuarentena debido a contacto cercano son opcionales.

El Distrito ha continuado monitoreando información y legislación discutidas en Austin como parte de la 87ª sesión legislativa de Texas. A partir del 21 de junio, no existe legislación actual que aborde las opciones de aprendizaje remoto en el futuro para estudiantes en Texas. Además, la Agencia de Educación de Texas ha comentado que los distritos escolares no recibirán financiamiento por el aprendizaje remoto. Independientemente, GCISD tiene una academia virtual de tiempo completo en iUniversity Prep, la cual abrió en 2012 y se ha vuelto una de las escuelas virtuales en Texas con mejor desempeño. El Distrito buscará expandir las inscripciones en iUniversity Prep para estudiantes que cumplan con los siguientes requisitos:
- Inscritos en grado 5 a 12 para el año escolar 2021-2022. Los estudiantes inscritos en kinder hasta grado 4 sólo pueden participar mediante la instrucción en persona.
- Los estudiantes deben haber estado inscritos con un registro de asistencia del 90% o más, tener éxito académico, y participar durante todo el año escolar 2020-2021.
- Para estudiantes de grado 5 a 8:
- Aprobó la evaluación STAAR 2021 o la evaluación alternativa iUP si el estudiante no se presentó a todos los exámenes STAAR aplicables.
- Promovido al siguiente nivel de grado
- Para estudiantes de grado 9 a 12:
- Aprobó los exámenes de Final de Curso (EOC, por sus siglas en inglés: End of Course) requeridos hasta la fecha
- Está en camino a graduarse en cuatro años
- Los estudiantes deben haber recibido calificaciones de Avanzado superior – en todas las áreas del Sistema de Texas para Evaluar el Dominio del Idioma Inglés (TELPAS, por sus siglas en inglés: Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System)
- Las familias están comprometidas a continuar virtualmente en iUniversity Prep durante todo el año escolar 2021-2022.
Es importante tener en cuenta que los cursos ofrecidos en iUniversity Prep se ofrecen a través de una guía de selección de cursos separada, la cual se puede ver aquí. Estas son las únicas ofertas de cursos disponibles para estudiantes. Además, los estudiantes no son elegibles para participar en ningún programa o actividad extracurricular ofrecidos en ninguna otra escuela de GCISD. Los estudiantes que asisten a iUniversity Prep aún podrán inscribirse en cursos avanzados, cursos AP, cursos acelerados en matemáticas y ciencias de la escuela intermedia y crédito dual. Las familias interesadas en inscribirse en iUniversity Prep deben inscribirse para asistir a una sesión de información virtual.
