St. John Earns USA TODAY Award
Grapevine High School’s Walker St. John was recently named the USA TODAY Texas Boy’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year. The award was announced as a part of the USA TODAY 2021 Texas High School Sports Awards, with ultramarathon star Dean Karnazes making the announcement.
During his junior year in 2020-2021, St. John won three UIL State Championships. He first won individual and team cross country gold medals at the UIL Cross Country Championships in November. Then, St. John won the gold medal in the 5A 1600-meter race at the UIL Track and Field State Meet in May.
With his state award, St. John is now a nominee for the national USA Today Cross Country Athlete of the Year award. That award will be announced during the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards on August 5 that will be hosted by Michael Strahan and Rob Gronkowski.
