Guide to Program Entry and Transition Points

Below is a guide to all of the learning opportunities in GCISD, organized based on your child's program entry and transition points. Although an entry process is available for each opportunity, it is important to remember that the only way to be guaranteed attendance at a particular GCISD campus is to reside in that campus' attendance zone.

Entering Pre-Kindergarten

GCISD Pre-K is a high-quality full-day program serving four-year-old students across the District. Each classroom has a fully certified teacher and teaching assistant that provide developmentally appropriate instruction that is exciting and engaging for our students.

Entering Kindergarten/Current Elementary Student

When your child enters kindergarten, enters a GCISD elementary school for the first time at a different grade or wishes to transfer from their current GCISD elementary campus to another, you have two choices:

1. You can choose the school zoned for your address. Some of GCISD's elementary options are geared toward a certain area of emphasis.  Other options cater toward a more multidisciplinary approach. All GCISD elementary schools offer engaging experiences with the core curriculum in math, science, social studies, and language arts as well as many additional opportunities that reflect the school community.

2. You can consider a transfer into a specialized campus (see list below). If you choose to consider one of the options listed based on a program emphasis, please see the transfer process (Bear Creek, Bransford, Cannon, Colleyville, Dove, Glenhope non-ASPIRE, Grapevine, Heritage, Silver Lake, O.C. Taylor and Timberline) or qualification (Glenhope ASPIRE) process that applies for that campus.

Additional elementary opportunities based on academic need/preference
- GT LEAD for Kindergarten (Qualifications) - GT LEAD for kindergarteners is a cooperative effort involving kindergarten classroom teachers and the Gifted Specialist on campus. Planned learning experiences are provided to challenge students with critical and creative thinking processes. These learning experiences also serve to screen all kindergarteners for behaviors associated with intellectual giftedness. Beginning the second semester, kindergarten students formally identified as gifted are served through GT LEAD classes in addition to differentiation provided by the GT trained classroom teacher.
- GT LEAD for Grades 1-5 (Qualifications) - Gifted students in grades 1-5 are served through GT LEAD classes facilitated by a GT Specialist and through the School-wide Cluster Grouping Model. Gifted students are clustered in a classroom with other GT students and a GT trained teacher. Advanced academic needs are met through differentiation provided by the GT Cluster Teacher with the support of the GT Specialist. In addition, students attend GT LEAD classes to engage in extension and enrichment of the curriculum.
- Math Telescoping (Registration) - Math telescoping is a local service offered in GCISD for students in grades 1-7 who qualify by telescoping testing in accordance with Board policy EHDC (Local) can enroll in mathematics courses above their enrolled grade level. Any student in grades K-7 can register to take the Math Telescoping Examination. Those that score 90% or higher will be accepted into the program.

Transitioning to Secondary/Current Secondary Student

When your child enters 6th grade, enters a GCISD secondary school for the first time at a different grade or wishes to transfer from their current GCISD secondary campus to another, you have a few choices. You can choose the school zoned for your address. All GCISD secondary campuses offer engaging experiences with the core curriculum in math, science, social studies, and English as well as many additional elective opportunities.

You can also choose a program based on interest, application, or qualification. If this is the goal of your student, please see the transfer process (all campuses), application (AVID, Collegiate Academy, iUniversity Prep) or qualification (ASPIRE) process that applies for that campus/program.
